February 2025Inclusive education is a fundamental pillar in building a more equitable society with greater opportunities for all. This approach must ensure that every student, regardless of their background, gender, disability, or economic situation, has access to quality education on equal terms. In a country like Bolivia, characterized by cultural diversity and significant socioeconomic challenges, educational inclusion is not just a necessity but also a crucial strategy for development.
In Latin America, challenges related to educational inclusion remain significant, especially in rural areas and among vulnerable communities. According to UNESCO, more than 12 million children in the region are still out of the school system, with a high percentage coming from rural areas or extreme poverty contexts. In Bolivia, these disparities are particularly evident. Although the literacy rate exceeds 92%, there are stark differences between urban and rural areas. While access to basic education reaches 98% in cities, this figure drops to 78% in rural areas, highlighting substantial gaps in infrastructure, educational materials, and access to trained teachers.
This reality underscores the need to address educational inequalities from a comprehensive perspective that considers not only access to education but also the quality and relevance of available resources.
Bolivia faces numerous challenges on its path toward educational inclusion. Rural communities, often isolated, suffer from a lack of basic educational resources, ranging from infrastructure to trained teaching staff. According to the Ministry of Education, school attendance rates are significantly lower in rural areas than in urban ones, especially at the secondary level. This demonstrates the urgent need to invest in technology and programs that bring learning to remote regions, as well as in public infrastructure policies that recognize education as a fundamental need.
The Solydes Foundation plays a key role in promoting inclusive education in Bolivia. Through its support of initiatives like "Enseña por Bolivia" (Teach for Bolivia), it aims to bridge educational gaps by training young professionals as teachers and promoting access to quality education in the most vulnerable areas. This program has benefited over 10,000 students and has helped establish a transformational leadership network in more than 60 public educational institutions.
The "Enseña por Bolivia" program is an initiative that seeks to address educational inequality at its structural roots.
Enseña por Bolivia (ExB) is a member of "Teach For All," a global network of organizations that fosters collective leadership to ensure that all children can fully develop their potential. The fundamental goal is to transform education and create equal opportunities for all.
This program includes a rigorous selection and training process for participants, who receive instruction in educational leadership, innovative pedagogy, and community engagement skills. Additionally, Enseña por Bolivia promotes the creation of an Alumni network, composed of former teachers who, after their classroom experience, continue leading projects that drive educational and social development. This effort exemplifies the Solydes Foundation's commitment to inclusive, high-quality education that empowers the most disadvantaged communities.
The Solydes Foundation also invests in technological innovation as a means to expand and improve access to education. Through its startup acceleration program, Solydes Accelerator, it fosters the creation of technological solutions that address educational challenges. These initiatives aim not only to improve learning quality but also to reach students in vulnerable contexts, particularly in rural areas.
The use of digital tools has proven essential in bridging educational gaps. Programs integrating online learning platforms and mobile applications have facilitated access to educational content, even in the most remote regions.
In another key initiative, the Campesino Academic Units (UACs) play a crucial role in educational inclusion in Bolivia, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas where access to higher education remains a challenge. These institutions, part of the academic structure of the Bolivian Catholic University, are committed to training professionals who contribute to the comprehensive development of their communities.
With campuses in Carmen Pampa, Tiahuanacu, Pucarani, Batallas, and Escoma, as well as in marginal areas of El Alto, the UACs combine quality education with contextualized research and strong social engagement. This approach enables graduates not only to acquire technical knowledge but also to become change agents in their own regions.
The Solydes Foundation has played a fundamental role in strengthening the UACs by providing financial support to low-income students so they can complete their university studies without economic difficulties. Each year, the Foundation grants approximately 45 full scholarships to the most outstanding students in these institutions, allowing them to continue their education and reducing university dropout rates. This support not only facilitates access to higher education but also fosters the development of skilled professionals who can provide solutions to rural challenges.
The impact of this program has been significant. To date, Solydes has awarded 294 full scholarships to UAC students, contributing to the creation of opportunities in historically marginalized communities.
Another relevant fact is that 75% of the beneficiaries of this program have been women, thereby strengthening equitable access to higher education and promoting female leadership in key sectors.
Educational inclusion in Bolivia requires sustained and collaborative efforts. It is crucial to address challenges such as the digital divide, continuous teacher training, and active community participation. Bolivia is making progress in implementing inclusive policies, but the path to a truly equitable education system still has goals to achieve.
The Solydes Foundation continues working to ensure that education serves as a transformative tool for the most disadvantaged communities. Through its programs and projects, the Foundation demonstrates that a future where education is accessible to all is not only possible but also necessary.
